pleasure to be here with you this morning on the green ship of our u.s. navy. it's very appropriate that it be here heading the fleet in san francisco. admiral beeman, thank you very much for your leadership. it is impressive what we are accomplishing. just two years ago, we started with an understanding that our military, the coast guard, the u.s. navy, the marine corps, had something that we really needed. it's called logistics expertise. and we recognized that and with the help of our fleet week association, with the help of our honorary chair, former secretary of state george scholtz, along with senator feinstein who started fleet week, we began to appreciate in addition to appreciating the men and women in uniform and the wonderful attributes of having fleet week and the blue angels and the parade of ships, we could also be working on something very important to this city. all across the world there are examples after example and i know the men and women and leadership of the uss macon know this after their tour of duty these past months, all over the world there are disasters and emer

islands. three chinese naval vessels sailed through the area. the u.s. navy has deployed two nuclear power aircraft carriers in the western pacific. they are navigating within reach. t several warships including vessels equipped with the air defense system are running alongside them. a navy sports person says the fleet provides a compact force of the united states and its allies and partners. there's fresh tension between japan and south korea. the south launched a protest with japan claiming that a helicopter belonging to the self-defense force entered the air defense identification zone in the sea of japan. the issue centers around the takeshima islands. they are claimed by japan but controlled by south korea. the south korean defense ministry says a helicopter took off located 54 kilometers east of the islands on september 21st. the ministry said the helicopter entered the zone for five minutes. it said the craft left after it was warned by air force fighter jets. the ministry noted prior approval is required before entering the zone. it set us defensive measure against unidentifi

spots this morning. we started with the parade of ships as vessels from the u.s. navy and u.s. coast guard came under the golden gate bridge and into the bay. that was followed by the air show at 12:30, including some impressive of air ak crow bat icks. spectators were also wowed by a b-2 stealth bomber. the weather cooperated beautifully, viewing was clear as can be and not al at all hindered by the fog as in the case in years past. >> just makes you really proud to be an american and san franciscan and to be out here, just -- i just got shivers. just beautiful. great day. >> the planes are awesome. it's a great time, a lot of people out here. it's really fun. good times. >> reporter: and fleet week is a joint tradition between the navy, marine corps and coast guard and a chance for the public to see the military vessels and aircraft on display. the air show wraps up at 4:00 so we can expect an exodus of at least one group of people just a short from now. the blue angels are still flying overhead. we'll have a wrap-up of this show atite:00. live in san francisco, monty francis, nbc

told is that two u.s. navy vessels have collided off the eastern coast of the united states. it happened a couple of hours ago. the collision between the uss montpelier and the uss san jacinto occurred approximately 3:30 p.m. eastern daylight time. word just coming into the newsroom now. what we understand thankfully is there are no reports of any injuries aboard the two vessels. this is a u.s. navy submarine and we believe it is an aegis cruiser that have collided off the coast of the eastern portion of the united states at this hour. the personnel onboard are all accounted for. nobody injured. overall damage to both ships now being evaluated. this is coming in to the urgent cue from the newsroom that is what i'm getting this from. the propulsion plant of the submarine unaffected by the collision. both ships currently operating under their own power and now there is an investigation into the incident that might have caused this. both the is submarine and ship were conducting a routine training at the time of the accident. this word coming in to us. two u.s. navy vessels have co
